At first glance, Imaginary seemed like it would be a sci-fi musical full of time travel and fantasy. But once the show began, it turned out to be something much deeper—a touching and emotional story that offers comfort and healing.
The story begins in the room of Jun Baker, a developer who has created a special program called “Imaginary.” This program allows people to search for and delete specific memories they want to forget. One day, his younger brother Kai Baker, who has been struggling with mental illness and painful memories, suddenly returns after ten years. He asks Jun to help him erase his trauma using the program. Jun hesitates, but eventually agrees. Together, they begin a journey through Kai’s memories.
A key symbol in the show is the puzzle. The memories that cause pain are represented as puzzle pieces. Jun and Kai search for these missing pieces, hoping to find and remove the one memory that is the source of Kai’s suffering. Along the way, they meet Lia, a mysterious person who might be the missing piece—or something else entirely.
Although the stage is small, the lighting and video effects are beautiful and creative. The lights gently move across the floor and walls, creating a dreamy atmosphere that draws the audience into the story even more.
The actors give wonderful performances. They bring moments of laughter as well as moments of deep emotion. Their acting helps the audience truly connect with the characters and reflect on their own memories and emotions.
As I watched Kai’s journey, I began to wonder:
"What memory would I erase, if I had the chance? What part of my past is still affecting me today?"
And in asking those questions, I realized that facing old memories might be the real beginning of healing.
Imaginary is not just a science fiction musical—it’s a moving story about memory, pain, family, and forgiveness. It’s a great example of the power of Korean original musicals (K-Musicals), showing how Korean creators can tell universal, heartfelt stories in unique and creative ways.
If you're looking for a musical that goes beyond entertainment and truly touches your heart,
I highly recommend Imaginary.
It’s a healing musical experience that will stay with you long after the curtain falls.
