2. Story

Antonio Salieri, a composer from a poor village, works hard to become a court composer. One day, he watches Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart perform and is amazed by his incredible talent. Salieri’s music is careful and follows the rules, but Mozart’s music is full of creativity, energy, and brilliance.

Even with his amazing talent, Mozart lives a wild and careless life, spending all his money on parties. Salieri loves Mozart’s music but hates that such amazing music comes from someone so reckless. His jealousy grows so strong that he even begins to curse God, who gave Mozart his talent.

The two rooms highlighted the contrasting lives of Salieri and Mozart.

3. Review

Most people know Mozart, but few know Salieri. This play shows the very different lives of the two men: Salieri, the hardworking composer, and Mozart, the free-spirited genius. “Amadeus” means “loved by God,” which fits Mozart perfectly, while Salieri feels jealous and left out.

The story is told mostly from Salieri’s view. It shows his feelings of envy, despair, and anger, as well as his attempts to hide Mozart’s talent from the world. Even though Salieri hates Mozart, he understands Mozart’s music better than anyone.

A highlight of the play is the last scene, where Salieri helps Mozart write the Requiem, guiding him and writing music together. It is a very emotional and memorable moment.

Although it is a play, Mozart’s music—like The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and The Magic Flute—is played throughout, and the actors sing some opera live on stage. The music makes the story feel even more emotional and rich.

Kim Jaeuck, as Salieri, performs a large amount of dialogue and shows every change in his feelings. He perfectly expresses jealousy, admiration, anger, and despair, pulling the audience into Salieri’s mind.

Kim Jun-young, as Mozart, shows Mozart’s wild and fun personality while also displaying his genius. The actor brings the character to life, making Mozart’s story feel real and exciting.

This 2025 performance of Amadeus tells the timeless story of Mozart and Salieri and shows the amazing talent of Kim Jaeuck, making it a must-see for fans of Korean theater.
